- This remake of the silent film tells the story of the deranged Doctor Caligari and his faithful sleepwalking Cesare and their connection to a string of murders in a German mountain village. The plot is presented as a flashback, as told by Francis, about his best friend Alan and his fiancée Jane. They meet Dr. Caligari and Cesare, who predicts the future. Alan asks how long he has to live, Cesare says he has until dawn, and the prediction comes true when Alan is murdered.
- The Town Clerk is seen when Dr. Caligari goes to his office to obtain a permit to show his exhibit, the somnambulist Cesare. The Town Clerk treats the Doctor arrogantly, but finally indicates for his assistant to give the doctor a permit. The next day the Town Clerk is found stabbed to death.
